4 Signs It’s Time to Consider Replacing Your Siding

May 2, 2023

The siding of your home is the protective barrier from the outdoor weather elements. It protects the content of your home from rain, wind, extreme temperatures, pests, and debris. It is wise to make sure the siding can withstand these elements, or damage can occur.

How do I Know it’s Time to Replace the Siding?

Here are four major considerations in determining if it is wise to consider replacing the siding of your home.

Cracked, Warped, Blistered, or Rotting Siding

For obvious reasons, the siding will not be able to stand up against weather conditions if it is already damaged in some way. Perhaps water has seeped into the siding, which creates the blistering, or even a bubbling, effect. If you notice cracks in the siding, there could be more in-depth damage needing to be addressed. Perhaps it has begun to rot underneath the siding, and the crack is all you see. It may be wise to call a roofing professional and inquire about getting an inspection to determine how severe the damage is.

Evidence of Fungus, Mold, or Mildew

Be cautious if you notice one of these three growths on your siding. Each of these indicates there is a moisture issue. If that is indeed the case, then there is a possibility that water is seeping through behind the siding, and causing unseen damage. Not all kinds of fungus are indications of more damage, so it is wise to have the areas inspected by knowledgeable professionals to determine the nature of the growth.

Higher Energy Bills

No one enjoys the rising costs of energy bills. It would be wise to inspect your attic and insulation levels before pointing the blame to the siding. Perhaps your home just needs a little additional cushion in the attic, and the bills will decrease to a comfortable financial amount. If, however, your insulation has been addressed and the bills continue to increase, consider the idea that air is not being halted at the siding before entering the home. Old or damaged siding does not insulate well, so consider new siding if this is the case.

Frequent Painting Needs

If your siding is no longer holding the paint as it should, perhaps the siding itself is the problem. Most homes require a fresh coat of paint every 8 to 10 years. If your home seems to be in need of a freshen-up much more frequently, perhaps this is an indication that it just isn’t holding on to the color as it should. Consider upgrading to a siding with long-lasting color which holds essentially no maintenance.
